dermatographia art!
someone else with dermatographia!!

"This young woman has a rare skin condition known as dermatographia. This is an immune system skin hypersensitivity that releases histamine which is the chemical (neuro-transmitter) your body produces when you’re having an allergic reaction. High levels of histamine cause this woman’s blood vessels to dilate and make the vessel walls abnormally permeable and this causes the welts to appear. The welts reportedly last for 30 minutes, giving the young woman time to draw various patterns on her body and then take pictures of the drawings." -trendhunter

windowseat + a new office
tonight, if i am properly caffeinated and motivated i am going to clear out my closet - which is fairly deep - and put my desk & puter in there! office! i don't have many clothes anymore so i'll try to stuff them all in sky's dresser.

and where the windows are in the bedroom - the wall juts out - and screams for a windowseat. i am going to try to fashion one out of my cedar chest & a bench with lots of pillows.

yay!

Dolphin rescues stranded wales
Most days, Moko the bottlenosed dolphin swims playfully with humans at a New Zealand beach. But this week, it seems, Moko found his mojo.

Witnesses described Wednesday how they saw the dolphin swim up to two stranded whales and guide them to safety.

Before Moko arrived, rescue workers had been working for more than an hour to get two pygmy sperm whales, a mother and her calf, back out to sea after they were stranded Monday off Mahia Beach, said Conservation Department worker Malcolm Smith.

But Smith said the whales restranded themselves four times on a sandbar slightly out to sea from the beach, about 300 miles northeast of the capital, Wellington. It looked likely they would have to be euthanized to prevent a prolonged death, he said.

"They kept getting disorientated and stranding again," said Smith, who was among the rescuers. "They obviously couldn't find their way back past (the sandbar) to the sea."

Then along came Moko, who approached the whales and appeared to lead them as they swam 200 yards along the beach and through a channel out to the open sea.

"Moko just came flying through the water and pushed in between us and the whales," Juanita Symes, another rescuer, told The Associated Press. "She got them to head toward the hill, where the channel is. It was an amazing experience."

Anton van Helden, a marine mammals expert at New Zealand's national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa, said the reports of Moko's rescue were "fantastic" but believable because the dolphins have "a great capacity for altruistic activities."

These included evidence of dolphins protecting people lost at sea, and their playfulness with other animals.

"But it's the first time I've heard of an inter-species refloating technique. I think that's wonderful," said van Helden, who was not involved in the rescue but spoke afterward to Smith.

Statler & Cricket sittin in a tree
Statler gave up on Cloude a while ago and set his sights on Cricket. Now he & Cricket are BFF, preening, gurging, following each other around.

I feel bad for Waldorf. But Waldorf has fallen in love with Berv. He can't fly but he ran across the room to Berv. So cute.

MUST TAKE PICCIES.

10K Budgie
10K BudgieIn a nation of animal lovers, Penny Jenkins might just be the most dedicated. The Aucklander has spent at least $10,000 helping beloved budgie Chico cheat death.

"He was supposed to be a $40, low-maintenance feathered friend," she said. "But he's turned into a billion-dollar budgie with attitude."

The 8-year-old flies free in his own granny flat and needs regular appointments with bird expert Dr Berend Westera because of his weak immune system. And the cost of x-rays, blood tests, anaesthetics and regular stays at the Lynfield Vet Clinic have added up.

But Jenkins isn't concerned. "It's just like having a sick child. You prioritise, and he's a priority."

5br - 3 Bath Pristine Victorian Mansion
today berv and i drove out to lawrence to look at an apartment:

Beautiful 1850s Victorian in the prestigious Tower Hill Neighborhood of Lawrence. Situated on 1/2 acre of landscaped gardens this one of a kind home has 3 parlors, ample remodeled kitchen with center island and country cabinets, built-in bookshelves, two fire places, and a barn.

at the highest point in lawrence, we found it. it was right out of the great gatsby - a wonderful old paint-flaking victorian mansion with LAND, shrouded in bird-filled trees, columns, gables, & a rusted wrought iron fence... there were turrets and a solarium & how could this possibly be available at so small a price? surely it is haunted, the place of murders, suicides...

it turned out to not be the place (wah!) but was fun to dream about & spend the afternoon all excited about...

He's not flying away though! His eyes are wide, at attention. He's intrigued, yet wary.

Skye update
This morning Skye still hadn't laid her egg so they tried the procedure that would relax her egg-laying muscles. This afternoon she still hadn't laid her egg.

Berv took the T down to Angell and sang to Skye and left her favorite toy for her.

They were just about to put her under so they could do the procedure where they drain the contents of the egg with a needle when SHE PASSED THE EGG!!!!

She is doing fine! They gave her a salad & she devoured it! She is beating the living hell out of her toy and she gets to come home tonight!!

SKYE!!!!

Skye
my skye bird is at angell memorial. she had her lupron shot there sunday and weighed 39 grams so we knew she had an egg. then she didn't pass it. we put her in the bathroom with lots of humidity & warmth & massaged her tummy & oiled her vent & gave her egg food but still, no egg.

yesterday we took her to angell. she wasn't fluffed on the cage floor or holding herself odd but we knew she should have laid that egg & we couldn't find one anywhere.

they gave her a shot of calcium & put her in the humidity cage & rubbed her belly through out the day but she still hasn't laid. they are giving her another shot tomorrow.

there are 2 procedures they are thinking of if she doesn't pass the egg tomorrow. one is a shot that will loosen her egg laying sphincter. the other is a hollow needle that will suck all the liquid from the egg and then they will crush the shell inside her and she will pass it over a series of days.

i was so sure she would pass the egg if only she had the calcium. that was the only thing we didn't have this time - the calcium syrup for her water.

dr. orcutt says we're stopping the lupron shots. they just can't compete with 7 gorgeous budgie boys.

i don't want any procedures operations rehomings i want my skye bird i want skye home on bervie's shoulder where she belongs

please keep a happy thought for my pretty girl

bird update
Dubbins is becoming a strong flyer. Last week he made it to the top of the windowsill for the first time. He hung on tight and and screamed for joy. He was SO PROUD of himself. He's gained so much confidence being able to fly. He won't back down & let any other bird steal his coconut now like he used to. He adores Henry.

Henry adores Henry too.

Statler & Waldorf moved into the bird room this week. Before, it was impossible to get them to come out of their cage. Tonight, it was near impossible to get them to go back in! They have joined the flock and are foraging and playing with all the other bubs. Little Waldorf has a wing deformity and can't really fly so we have little ladders and bridges everywhere so he can play along with everyone else. Statler isn't used to flying but he is getting stronger.

Skye weighed 39 grams at the vet Sunday. 39!
